McCain Trade Shows Dolphins Maturing as a Franchise

As Chris McCain moves on to New Orleans, in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick, I am struck by two things which both bode well for our organization.
First:  It is nice to see a professional at work.  McCain is a class act, who made the most of his opportunities with the Dolphins and will bring character and class to the Saints locker room as he did to ours.  If only Dion Jordan could have approached his tenure with our team with the same dignity and sense of proportion.  By acting now, the Dolphins have taken care of McCain and sent a message about being a quality partner to players who "do the right thing." McCain has landed with a team that has invested in him; it therefore stands to reason that he will make that roster and be a valued member of their team.
Second:  It is nice to see the Dolphins being proactive.  While I hoped for more in exchange for McCain, that we are getting something in return for a player we likely would have had to cut feels good.  Too often in the past our personnel department has simply released players without putting anything back in the tank.  It is nice to see the team develop a plan and execute it in a timely fashion.
Oh- and an added benefit:  McCain won''t be wearing AFC East colors and making statement plays against a franchise that treated him shabbily.  We've all seen that movie a few too many times...

I mean, yeah, but... other hand look at our situation at DE: it looks good on paper *right now*, but Wake and Williams are closer to the ends of their respective careers than the beginnings, and none of the others has exactly set the world on fire as a pass rusher. So one can question the wisdom of parting ways with a young, up and coming player at a premium position.

But hey, at least we got a draft pick out of it.

@ Phillip:

Who do you suggest we should have cut in order to keep McCain?

Somebody has to go to cut the roster down and Jay hit it right on the nose that we at the very least got something in return.

I think this shows how well the personel dept is doing in that other teams value our depth.

Good question. You have to figure Wake, Williams, Branch and Jones are on the roster for sure, and probably Terrence Fede. So the question is, how many defensive ends could we reasonably have carried?

At least we actually have some tough roster decisions to make this year. Although I am still not convinced there is enough talent on this team overall to make a playoff push. I'm hoping, but definitely still in "wait and see" mode.

Nice conversation, all. Phillip: DL as a group might get 9 guys, maybe 10. I think Fede is in for sure, making Dion Jordan the last cut unless he PUP's his way past initial cuts. What I worry about somewhat is how old this group is getting, but the Williams signing suggests that our DL is built around an aging superstar (Suh) and we are committed to trying to make this a winning group during his contract life.

I personally like the move, McCain would have been cut anyways. There was no other spot we could have cut back on in order to keep him. CB? LB? RB? OL? RB? I'd rather not. We are deep at DE and had to make a move. We can and will draft another DE next year, mark my words. Not to mention Terrance Fede needs some work in pass rush but will be solid with more coaching and reps.

I am in wait and see mode also. I am not sold on this time this year either. I've been fooled before. So we shall see. This team has looked great in preseason before and look what happened...

Understood, Lawrence. I'm not sure about wins and losses. I just want to see a good plan unfold and trust our stewardship. And... we might just win.

Terrence Federal is hurt I think they said sprained MCL. That means he starts the maybe on temporary IR like Ajay last or pup list. It might Dieon Jordan in if they keep five. Thousands of players are about to hit the waiver wire. They may bring somebody else in. Our LBs are NOT going to be safe from the waiver wire either especially the undated one if the regime feels a player on waiver is better than let's say a Hewitt or Hull.

I agree with Lawrence. Unfortunately, for Chris, he has trouble setting the edge on run plays. This is crucial. Bill Belicheat always runs right at the weakest DE. He destroyed Dion Jordan running right at him which showed Jets and Bills (as well as rest of the league) how to do it. Great upside potential as a pure pass rusher though as well as special teams player.

I think we will keep Dion Jordan because of his upside in that he is so athletic. Hard to imagine anyone else on our roster as big and quick as he is.

Good article and great conversation here. First thing I thought when I heard the news last night was "Thank God we won't see him in the AFC East" and "at least we got something for him - we were going to release him anyway)". Agree with the points mentioned about his inability to set the edge. I have no doubt Belicheck and NE would've picked him up to "download" info from him or stick him into game 2 as a situational pass rusher to make Tannehill's life miserable. This does show some development on the part of the organization, actually getting something for a player we would've released anyway.

Great conversation everyone! I love what we are building here. Mark: exactly my sentiments. Sad to see a fun, high motor player go, but the change was going to come either way.
