This Looks Like More of the Same...

There certainly has been a lot written this offseason about the changes Gase was going to bring to the team.  That's nice.  By the time Philbin left, we all were begging for change.  But do we have it?  To my eyes, this team seems to be just as dumb - in some ways different and some ways the same.

The Different Stupidity:  I think its certain, having been presented with the opportunity to kick a FG to tie, Philbin would have kicked that field goal.  It doesn't matter that Philbin's reason was that he was idiotically conservative regardless of the situation.  This isn't to say that Philbin generally made good decisions - most of the time he had this team playing as dumb as Cam Cameron.  But, given the close score and the lack of execution on offense, Philbin's conservative decision making may have won a game that Gase lost.

The Same Stupidity:  This offense, with this core of players (Tannehill, the WRs, part of the Line, etc.) has never really executed well.  The offensive system may be different, but the ability to score points is about the same.  Nothing ever clicks.  When the QB is on, the WRs drop the ball.  When the WRs get open, the O-line is a sieve.  And when it comes time to march the team down field for a last minute victory, the QB disappears when it matters most.  Sure, the offense may have individual talent, but it has yet to play as a team.  It was the case for Philbin as it is for Gase.

Maybe with that fourth and inches call, Gase was trying to show that he was "different" than Philbin.  But it all looked the same to me:  The offense still plays like they'd rather be somewhere else - cashing an easy paycheck, and the coaching still makes dumb game day decisions.  More of the same in Miami.  At least we can watch New England play Super Bowls under our new veranda.

First of all it's Gase. Not Gates. Do you even follow the team. And you said Gates about 100 times so I know it wasn't a typo. Secondly did you miss that last offensive drive that they drove down for the touchdown at the end? Where the hell do they find some of these guys that write? Gates? Really? Did you even watch the game?

avatar

I assure you I follow the team and saw the game. It was a mistake, thanks for letting me know.

As far as the last drive: 30 seconds left with the ball at the 20. Tannehill moved the team backwards. It would have been nice to see some kind of fight, some kind of forward movement. But that last drive looked just like most of the other drives of the game - an offense asleep.

This offense played like crap for most

avatar

As far as typos, your auto spell continues to load the most used words first so Gates could come more often than Gase.

If anything, linearz should have read and edited prior to posting. But attacking him for a minute error is unfair. We all know who he meant.

At the very least, he puts a name to his thoughts unlike some "unknown"s out thers

avatar

Carl - Thanks.

FWIW, I've also called him Case for the same reason. In fact, I've now resolved to mispell this head coach's name until he stops being a knucklehead and wins a game.

Stops being a knucklehead!? It was his first game and he called it great. It was a nice change and had it worked people would be calling it the best call ever. Gase called a good game. We ran a top team to the last 30 seconds in their own house which is one of the most difficult places to win in! Oh and let's not mention the are the returning number one defense.

avatar

And the last scoring drive? 80 or so yards and a touchdown. Did you miss that one? Are you complaining about the last 20 second drive with no timeouts? C'mon man!

avatar

Going for it on fourth down doesn't bother me. In fact, it's a breath of fresh air. Gase didn't blow the game, the players did. The drop by stills, the stupid special teams penalties, the missed FG, the lack of push in running game, etc. etc. The coach put them into position to win, and they lost. Call me a homer, but i loved what i saw from our coaching staff, especially from Vance Joseph who took a last place defense from last year and had them playing very well.

GO PHINS~!

Right on Gary! I loved the call! It was like seeing sunshine after the sun has been burnt out for 8 years! Nobody expected a win in Seattle. I thought it was a great debut for Gase and the team! Things are looking up! We will improve with each week in developing this new offense

Ok people; let's be honest about things here. Let's go backwards from the 4th quarter to the first quarter. The last possession; when there is 31 seconds on the clock; YOU KNEEL DOWN in the endzone. Second; the overthrow to a wideopen Kenny Stills in the last possession. Chances are; he may have dropped that one too. He was just off today. But I know that Matt Moore or Brandon Doughty would not have missed a wide open receiver. I told you all that this would happen; where the game is on the line and tannehill will miss a wide open receiver and it will cost us the game; as it did today. If tannehill had not missed a wide open Kenny Stills; we would have simply won the game. Also Adam Gase should have given Jakeem Grant or the newcomer; Hunter, a shot at a couple deep passes. What did we have to lose? When a player is having an off night; you don't keep using him in clutch situations. Though tannehill played a little better today; I could tell that he is not clutch and he will still disappear in clutch situations; as he did today. Tannehill is still not producing points on the vast majority of his possessions; as in the past. Which wears our defense out when the 4th quarter rolls around. This is why the defense could not mount up a stop; because they were running on fumes. Adam Gase has got to put a QB under center who will generate points every week and not the usual one TD and two field goals. We need a QB who can throw deep passes accurately. Matt Moore & Brandon Doughty are what we need under center. Tannehill will give you a fight and a few yards; but he will not give you TDs and wins. We have got to move on from tannehill; he simply does not have what it takes. He will have one or two good games here and there where he will score some points; but he will always disappear and disappoint when it counts.

Already making excuses. Ross allows his staff to say it was just a off day so the players say it's just a off day . Stop the excuses if a player can't produce find someone who can. Ross please start holding people accountable and not throw money at them . And to all the fans of the Dolphins STOP buying their excuses this is coming from a true fan . Do you remember the last winning season ?? LOL its been awhile.

I would have had 5 fastest guys out there on last series

I'm sorry.... But that's just a hack job writing... Jesus, where do they find these writers. More of the same??? Couldn't be farther from the truth. This defense is NOTHING like last years, & the offense... Well... Besides for the early season drops(which will never be remedied due to the c.b.a.) we just ran into the "legion". Far superior offense have faired far worse. We had some early season mistakes, and some key injuries(mainly Pouncy), but this team looks completely different form the one on the field last year. Tannehil didn't play bad. Besides for the early 4th down play, Gase called a decent game. Other than the O line(which will be different, & more solidified moving forward) I just don't "see" your argument. Sorry... I think there are FAR to many writers whom don't do their due diligence, & fall back on their preconceived notions. I'm just getting sick of SOME sports writers NOT doing their research, relying mostly on last years news to fill their pages.

avatar

Buying excuses? How bout this one- we will probable see the 2 best teams in the NFL in our first two games. We came into a situation where the WHOLE country had it panning out as a blowout, & we left 13 points on the field easy(& to their 3). Soooo, yes we lost. Who didn't expect that? & DONT LIE TO YOURSELF!- I don't think there's a single game this year I was more worried about. & we SHOULD/COULD have won! WE DIDNT, & I'm in no way saying they didn't deserve the win. But, if we're being honest-the only thing shocking about that game was how the Dolphins were actually in it for ALL 60minutes. We have ALOT of room for improvement. But it's just asinine to jump to THOSE conclusions after THAT game. It's week 1, & we played(what Vegas, & pro analysts) the best team in the NFC going into this season. The Dolphins on the other hand, played FAR better, & faired FAR better than the country expected.-(just ask all those people who lost money betting the spread).

avatar

& fans wonder why the rest of the league voted us the "worse fans in the NFL". It's so sad. We lost.... We lost a close game, to a great team. It's week 1, with a new head coach, new defense coordinator, etc. etc.. It's a game ALL THE PRO ANALYSTS SAID was going to be the biggest "blowout of the week". Was it??? NOT EVEN CLOSE! Our negative "fake fan" base says "horrible team, horrible coach, blah, blah,"...... How about our overall corner play?? Or how about the linebackers?? Or how about the run defense?? What?-those parts of the team did well??(and PLEEASE don't pick out one play, & pretend it was the concensus) because besides for some of the O line(which we didn't have our "corner stone" player this week), the team looked, and played well. The Stills drop broke my heart, & the 4th down play sucked(but that's only in hindsight.-the call wasn't drastic, or hairbrained). NO, we can't come away feeling good about that loss. BUT THATS ONLY BECAUSE WE COULD/SHOULD HAVE WON!!! Now, was that ANYTHING nearly as bad as ANY of the analysts projected? I understand it was a tough lost, but I am SO SICK of seeing all the overboard, bs from the segment of our FAKE FINS fans. Your THE WHOLE REASON our fan base is marginalized, & talked about so negatively. It's not that they're just telling the truth on the message boards. They seem to enjoy literary abuse. It sickens me to the core! I'm not in any way a dillusional fan. Far from it-(we still have some work to do), but by GOD, don't needlessly, drag them through the mud in places WHERE they don't deserve it! It was a tough game that we LOST, but ALSO should have raised some eyebrows of the analysts, & other teams who thought we were gonna be push overs! NOT THIS YEAR NFL!... We gotta NEEEW COACH, & a NEW TEAM!-(No more Philben)!!!!! Go Phins!

avatar

P.S. More of the same woulda' looked like the Vegas spread. THATS exactly what that's supposed to represent! Right??? And THATS with Vegas's money, & I don't think they like to lose!!-(do they??)

avatar

And to all those fake Phins fans who spew nothing but OVERBOARD hatred: I don't want to see a single message about you jumping on the bandwagon once this structure takes hold, & the wins start Rollin' in. Cause the bus will have already left, & you'll miss your ride to Buffalo, or wherever else your originally from! Just go patronize another team, because we already know your true colors!-(and they sure as hell aren't Aqua, and Orange)! Phins up, haters down!

avatar

@EBret - You're right about one thing. It is hacky to misspell the coaches name. I'll fix that moving forward.

But the rest - this isn't hatred, and you clearly missed the point, so here is a summary:

Good teams show up when the game is on the line. This team, once again, folded. This is nothing new.

I'm calling out the offense because of two reasons:

1. Offense is where most of the talent is on the team.
2. Our new coach is supposedly an Offensive wizard.

I saw none of it. The offense didn't really show up for the game. Our "#1" WR was nowhere to be found. Our rebuilt O-Line looks no different from the past. The running game was awful. I'm not sure this QB has the leadership skills to get it done.

"More of the same" means simply this: A significant portion of the team didn't show up for most of the game, and - when the team could have closed out a victory - it folded like a house of cards. This is nothing new. We've seen these shenanigans from the days of Tony Sparano. I was hoping there would be a change. But there isn't.

And I'm sorry to disappoint you with my lack of optimism, but the offseason marketing swayed me little. And criticizing a team I've been following for nearly 50 years isn't a bandwagon thing. I've seen all the coaching changes, from Wilson-Shula to Philbin-Gase. They all come with optimism, but the true bellwether is how sharp the team looks late in a close game.

I saw little different from the Philbin years.

avatar

@Eric Young,

"The last drive". You seem to think was the last drive of the game. It wasn't.

The last scoring drive was by Seattle, and the defense folded. I can't say I'm surprised, this defense isn't really that good. But, often early in the season, defenses outplay offenses, and that is what we got for the first 55 minute.

The last possession Miami had, where the team had a chance to win, the offense went backwards. 30 seconds, ball on the 20. Miami needs 40 yards to get in scoring position. Seattle defense is playing a prevent. And the offense goes backwards. That is just sad.

This team acted like it won after its "last drive", and you are as well. Unfortunately, the game wasn't over.

avatar

Ok. We just played the Sehawks!! And, it was a game we SHOULD have won on more than 2 occasions(the stills drop, & the blocked field goal). I'm not "happy about our play". It GUTWRENCHING. But to say this is the same team that played in London last year, or either of the buffalo games, your either DILUSIONAL, or JUST NOT DOING YOUR HOMEWORK. Yea', our Oline was bad(we are missing our center though), and the wide recievers didn't look great. BUT WHATS SEATLES D???-chopped liver??? The Phins would have had a much worse game if they played last year..... THUS=NOT THE SAME!!! We left 13 points on the field. Our D looked elite. Last years D???=NOT THE SAME... I'm sorry, your argument doesn't hold water. And I'm not some starry eyed fan who refuses to "see the team as they truly are". And I wasn't referring to you calling Gase incorrectly hacky. I said YOU ARE A HACK WRITER. Don't just sensationalize your arguments, & exaggerate the truth, & NOT expect to get called out by someone. It's WRONG, & your superiors should take exception. Your lucky your writing about the Dolphins, because(it sickens me to say) SOME of our fans seem to enjoy the negativity. Go write for another team! WE DONT NEED Any more like you!

avatar

YOUR THE REASON we've been voted amongst the bottom the NFL, when it comes to fans. When this team starts rolling, don't DARE TRY & jump on the bandwagon. The bus will have already left, & you and all the other haters will act as though you never wrote these things! WELL...! I, & others WILL REMEMBER!! Phins up, haters down!

avatar

Eric, & Gary bellow: remember this HACK of a writer, & the others who like to overexhagerate, and belittle this team! When we start wining we need to stand strong and call them out when they try to backstep there words, posts, & articles. It's shameful these writers get away with this overexhagerated defamation! Phins up Eric, & Gary! -& oh, Eric Bretschneider is my name, for those whom wish to take cause!

avatar

Sorry Dave, but what about the TD throw that was dropped by Stills??? Thills problems aren't in the "deep game". Your right he needs to finish better. In fact, I think that's where he needs to grow the most. But that last drive had nothing to do with the outcome. And Thill had a rough day, but there's NO WAY Moore or Doughty(in his early NFL life) would have been able to do anymore, or even play as well as Thill. I watched the game a couple times, & Thill really played fairly well(even better than Wilson) EXCEPT in his last drive. The loss is on special teams, and(I'm surprised by it) the wide recievers. Thill had us the win 3 diff times/ways, and it was OTHERS that failed. & in NO way am I a Thill (excuse) man. I'm still unsure of his future. & NO, he hasn't had a "fair shot" at it yet due to his handcuffing, inept past coach handling. I'll reserve that decision for this year. He has after all still thrown for 8gs in 2years, & kept the interceptions down(not to mention he WAS A TOP 5 deep ball thrower LAST YEAR)-so SOME of you need to back off your "deep ball" criticism, because it's been proven otherwise. Now.... For the last 30sec. after the (exceptional offense, & defensive team) Seahawks score AT HOME, there's really not much you can do... Game was already over.. Though I too woulda' tried the fastest 5 guys. Why not? Right Carl! 😉Phins up, haters down!!!

Ebret; what good is a lot of offense and little points to show for it? For the last 8 seasons all that we have gotten from Henne/Tannehill is stats and few wins. You cannot cash in stats for a spot in the playoffs. We need TDs early and often to compete in this league. Miami could have easily defeated Seattle if we had scored on just half of our possessions. Matt Moore & Brandon Doughty will get us TOUCHDOWNS early and often. This is why; despite Moore throwing a few interceptions occassionally; I would much rather have him under center. Just think; if we had scored a TD and a FG in each half; we would have easily won the game. This is why I keep saying; if we try another QB we would easily win our division; but it is not going to happen with tannehill. And for the record; I believe that tannehill overthrew Stills on purpose. I still believe that tannehill is a mole. He continues to do enough to make it appear that he is trying to win and he always does enough to ENSURE that we lose important games. I have watched him closely. On that last drive; all of a sudden he returns to the old tannehill; deer-in-the-headlights skill of play. Kenny Stills was wideopen and tannehill overthrew him by 15 yards. I am telling you folks; I believe that it is intentional. No skilled QB could possibly overthrow a wideopen receiver by that much UNLESS it was INTENTIONAL!I just cannot handle sacrificing 5th season. It is too much and insanely cruel to impose on the dolphin fans.

How in Gods green earth you blame Thill for the offensive battle this week BLOWS MY MIND! I'm NO THILL APPOLOGIST!! He has EVERYTHING to prove this year, but NOTHING about that game says "Thill was the reason for the loss". He missed the big throw late, but it was Stills, and Camron who dropped balls that cost points(especially the Stills drop). Your propensity to blame Thill for the lack of offense THIS PARTICULAR GAME is beyond stubbornness, & boarder line BLINDNESS. When he had time he played good, better than good actually. The cards he was dealt were tough. The recievers were almost Never open, & he was hurried an in ordinate amount of time. I'm not in any way sold on Thill yet, but blindly spewing your OBVIOUS DISLIKE, & blame, is unfair. We get it... You don't have to post ANY MORE OF YOUR blatantly obvious bias comments. I can understand fair criticism, heck I welcome, & support it. All I'm asking is TRY and give a "fair shake" to ALL PLAYERS! After all, they're the ones that are taking the licks, & putting it on the field. We need to atleast show them the respect when deserved, & be fair minded, & civilized when critiquing! PHINS UP, Haters DOWN!!!

avatar

Come on man... REALLY?? A MOLE??? Lol! Wow, I REALLY AM ONTO SOMETHING with my "fake hater Phins fans" comments. Buddy, if he's a Pats mole I'll find you and personally bow, shake your hand, & TELL the WORLD of your brilliant football knowledge. BUT, until that day, do Phins nation a favor, & don't burry us(literarily, not literally)-hopefully)!-lol! Just give em' a "fair shake"! Phins up, Hater down!

avatar

I like Doughty's potential, ALOT! But he's NOWHERE near ready. If Thill fails to evolve this year, I'd REALLY like to see the organization give him a "fair shot" whenever he's ready.

avatar

Oh' and with a different qb we win the division easy???? That WILL NEVER HAPPEN as long as New England is still playing like they HAVE BEEN for over a decade(& it absolutely OBLITERATES me to say such a thing, because I HATE, I HATE...... I HATE, the Pats). Saying ANY NFL team could "win this division easily" just reiterates your emotional writing tendencies. Sorry, by true buddy... Phins up, Haters Down! Let's shock the league this year!!-(now THATS, possible!)

avatar

I am fair to all of the players. When you are in the most important position you have to produce; weather the players support you or not. That is what Dan Marino and all of the greats did. Thus they were able to defeat good teams with no-named receivers; WHY? Because ultimately; they were not depending on no one but themselves; the QB! So if the receivers and the rest the team played well; good. But if they did not; Dan was not depending on them anyway. If his startters were not producing then Dan would try the lower ranked WRs that game and win the game. When Stills showed that he was having an off day; Adam Gase or tannehill should have tried someone else like the newcomer Hunter, Carroo or Jakeem Grant; and I GUARANTEE that we would have won the game! Desperate times calls for desperate measures. As Herman Edwards says: "You Play To Win The Game".
Tannehill only scores when it will not win us the game. He has been doing this for 4 seasons and it continued sunday. If there was only 2 minute left instead of 8 minutes left; I GUARANTEE you tannehill would not have scored a TD. He would have fumbled the snap or threw an interception. He did not mind scoring a TD when he did because he knew that Russell Wilson was going to get at least a field goal in his next drive and it would be too late for the dolphins to score again. When tannehill saw Kenny Stills wide open it upset him; which is why he greatly overthrew him. Tannehill use to do the same thing to Mike Wallace; because Wallace was so wide open; so the only way he could prevent a sure TD was to greatly overthrow Mike Wallace. People; tannehill is a mole. One day what I am proposing will be brought to the light. Then you all must come and kneel before me.
When the score was 3 to 3; and we were on the 6 yard line just before the half; tannehill almost threw a pick six. It would have been a pick six if the CB had been paying attention because tannehill threw it right to him. This is what tannehill has been doing for 4 seasons until now. You can get upset all you want too; I merely state facts.
Tannehill always does something to throw away the game or prevent us from winning. Just watch closely as I have been doing for years. Go back to the 2013 season until now and you will see the same thing. When we needed to defeat one of our last two opponents in 2013; tannehill threw 8 interceptions and lost both games. Any drive that will win the game for us will be sabotaged by tannehill somehow. This is why I want tannehill out of Miami. He is a mole. Now just as I predicted that tannehill will cost us the game by missing a wideopen receiver; he is going to break Adam Gase's heart when he least expect it. Tannehill is going to lose the game for us this sunday too. He only plays decent when his contribution will not win the game for us. And when it will win the game for us; he is going to throw an interception; fumble the snap, throw the ball too hard on a short route or intentionally hold the ball too long. Just think; with the game on the line; on our last possesssion look what tannehill did? First, he greatly overthrows a WIDEOPEN Kenny Stills. Then on the next two plays he suddenly forgets to run out of the pocket. He just stands there even though he sees the pocket collapsing.

Dude I'm sorry. But as a wise man once said "the longer you debate with a fool, the harder it is to differentiate one from another". I'm not calling you a fool, but I thought your post required this LAST response. I just wonder how in Gods earth you could actually believe Thill is a "spying mole"! I like a good "conspiracy theory" as much as the "next guy", but your Thill conspiracy has me COMPLETLY BEFUDDLED! Just do me a favor; if Thill, and the Phins start to turn this ship around, PLEASE write a post admitting your wrongfull theory. & if your right.... If Thill turns out to be an undercover spy(AS YOU STATED... Twice now!) I will post the equivalent response, & hail you the greatest "NFL INSIDER"/"Nostrodomus" IVE EVER COME ACROSS!
