STOP IT! Tannehill is not a "Game Manager"

I am so sick of hearing Orlando, Omar and all the other pseudo-expert "know-it-alls" tell me that Ryan Tannehill is "just a game manager."  Bull you know what!  Game managers can't throw the ball on the run to their non-throwing side of the field, stop and across their body deliver a strike for 55 yards, a la the Pittsburgh game to TE Gray.  That is a play-maker.   Game managers don't run for their lives and throw perfect completions for first downs - 3rd Down and 7 yards to go, Ryan escapes to his right and on the dead run delivered a perfect pass to a crossing Landry against the Buffalo Bills.  That is a play-maker.  Game managers can't do read option run plays for first downs in the red zone.  That is a PLAY-MAKER.   Strong-armed quarterbacks are rarely considered game managers.  And, as Marino is fond of saying, "never doubt Ryan's arm strength."

Now, if you want to tell me he sucks.  Go for it!   You're wrong.   If you want to tell me he has next to zero pocket presence; Well, you are 100% correct.   This is Ryan's greatest weakness.  If you want to tell me he makes terrible throws after being pummeled for most of the game; You are again correct.  If you want to tell me that he is not accurate with ball placement; I will say that under duress you are partially correct (under duress on the run - he is really good), and with protection, you are wrong.  Early in his career he had terrible ball placement, no doubt.   His accuracy and general ball placement has gotten much better every year.  If you want to tell me he can't throw the deep ball; well, the statistics do not bear that out.  Ryan is actually one of the better deep ball QBs over the last two years.  Early in his career, yes, he was below average.  Frankly though, had Mike Wallace caught a few more and fought for a few more balls, it would have been much different.

Let's be realistic.  Dan Marino, the greatest most accurate QB to ever play until Brady, had incredible Offensive Line protection for most of his career -  Webb, Sims, Ruddy... just to name a few protected him and EVERYONE KNEW he was going to throw and yet he was rarely hit.  Yes, he had the greatest pocket presence of any QB I have ever seen, and yes, he threw into tight windows that no one even attempts today, and yes, he had the fastest release of any quarterback ever.  But, hey, we will never see another Marino in our lifetime.    Ryan Tannehill will get better and better as the line protection and run game improves; But, most importantly as his line protection improves.  Let's not forget that Tannehill has been hit more than any other QB in the last 5 years, except Andrew Luck.  And, Luck throws a boat-load of interceptions, more than Tannehill.   Let's not compare Tannehill to Brady or Marino.   However, Tannehill is more than proficient enough to win a Super Bowl with a decent line.  He simply has not had a very good offensive line his entire career.  Had he played behind Dallas' Offensive Line, he would have been a star.  In the first five games this season, the line did a horrible job protecting Ryan.  This is exactly what Gase has been saying from day one.  If the offensive line does its job, Ryan plays well enough to win most games.   I think I will trust the offensive Guru, Head Coach Adam Gase, who is generally regarded as one of the smartest offensive minds in the league - over a few Wannabe Football Experts, like Orlando and Omar.

Ryan Tannehill is a play-maker.  He is smart; actually an extension of the coach.   And, just because he has a vanilla personality does not mean he plays vanilla!

AMEN! That's what I've been sayin'.

No one is saying he's going to be a top 10 QB but he doesn't have to be to win in the NFL.

BTW, Don't let it get you down when Apollos get on here with a burr up his butt and starts bashing Tannehill.

avatar

what? Miami will never smell a super bowl with him. And it'll be a huge mistake to keep him past this year.

avatar

Greg, dude, I hope you continue to follow the phins when Tannehill plays here for the next few years....

Good QBs improvise when the OL is not up to par. The problem was never the OL. When tannehill is no longer in Miami; all will come to know this fact because the next QBs will perform great no matter who is blocking for them. Before the brick wall was established; the previous OL perforned well whenever any other QB was under center except tannehill.
Omar Kelley has been saying for some time now; that tannehill needs a brick wall in front of him in order for him to play at an average level. What other QB in the league; who is starting at QB; needs a brick wall in front of them before they can perform up to the basic level? I will tell you; NONE. Andrew Luck has been getting killed just as much as tannehill, for the past 5 years behind a shotty OL but he still manages to win enough games to make the playoffs every year. Tannehill has not made the playoffs in 5 years; since his arrival; and even with the brick wall he plays at an average level; and he still will not make the playoffs in his 5th season.
And his insane supporters who swore that they would not make excuses for tannehill in 2014 and now in 2016 continue to make excuses. WHY? Because they are INSANE!
So basically; the insane tannehill supporters are saying; (if I use a boxer's analogy) "so if someone could just tie my opponent's hands behind his back and don't let him swing at me at all; then I can hit him a few times; and maybe even knock him out". If a boxer requested that about his opponents; all SANE observers would conclude that this person has no business in a boxing ring. Thus goes tannehill at QB! Five years later and tannehill still needs training wheels. Therefore a proper name for a 5th year WR turned QB who still plays like a rookie QB; should be: ("Training Wheels Tannehill") Because the training wheels at this point will never come off! And if tannehill is kept beyond this season; I can assure that there will be MUTINY by the players and the fans.

The problem has always been the broken OL. Look at Ajaye with a decent OL everyone gets better. Hater's be gone.

"Now, if you want to tell me he sucks. Go for it! You're wrong. If you want to tell me he has next to zero pocket presence; Well, you are 100% correct."

Having next tot zero pocket presence in the NFL means you aren't very good.

One thing you fail to mention is Tannehill lacks the intangibles great QB's have, especially that charisma that makes for a great leader in the huddle but also in the locker room. Anyone who ever came to Miami, even veterans from other teams, immediately knew it was Marino's team and they looked to him as a leader. The same for Brady, where even head cases like Moss immediately followed him as their leader. Hell, in Denver everyone on that team including veterans who had been there for years knew it was Manning's team as soon as he first set foot in that locker room. Tannehill doesn't have that, he's more like a Cutler, though people seem to like Tannehill on a personal level. He simply is a mediocre QB. Of course with a great defense and great running game, you can still with a mediocre QB, especially one like Tannehill who doesn't turn the ball over. But he's not going to carry the team on his shoulders like a Brees, Rogers, etc.

You just read what Dave posted, and your response was just pure bullshit.

Playmakers find a way to win in the 4th quarter. Tanne-Hype as had plenty of opportunities in his career to drive us down the field and win the game. Cannot remember new instance when he did that.

In his defense, coming into the league he only had about 15 games as a QB. Most QBs have a learning curve. This should now be his opportunity, with the OL in place and having a solid running game, to prove his metal.

I like the kid. I have 3 of his jerseys so I have a vested interest in his success.

All I want is to win games. Get into the playoffs and see how that shakes out. Jay Fiedler won 43 games in 4 years and helped to take us to the playoffs. I would be very pleased with that effort this year. Win 10 or 11 games and get to the show.

Call him what you want, I just want to win.

ANN54, Mike Pounce loves Ryan. He has never lost the lockerroom or huddle. He controls the offense and actually changed the blocking and the play at line of scrimmage on Ajayi touchdown. So, again wrong.

avatar

David, your Jets will be in town next week. Please follow them on their fan blogs.

Carl, Tannehill is criticized beyond measure. He is hardly Tanne-hype. Look at Carolina this year. See what bad OL play does to a very good QB and reassess. GB also. The OL has been below averge and A. Rogers has been ugly. I think he has had just one good game so far.

avatar

I never said he lost the locker room, try to read more carefully, I said he doesn't command the locker room the way the great ones do. He is a mediocre QB (I never said he sucked, know the difference) who has not shown the ability to carry the team on his shoulders like the great ones do. Pointing to one play or one player doesn't prove your point. How many game winning drives in the final minute has he led? Like I said they can win with him, if all the other pieces are perfectly in place, but he isn't the one to put them over the top the way the top QB's do. If you think he is an elite QB you have your head in the sand.

Tannehill is an average QB. I've certainly seen worse. But, if you grade him as a wide receiver who is playing quarterback, not so bad. He gets pummeled because he holds the ball to long, has no pocket presence and frequently telegraphs his passes. That being said, Trent Dilfer, Jeff Hostettler, Jim Plunkett, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypian, Jim Mcmahan, all won super bowls.... and the worst one of all, Joe Namath even managed to talk his way into the Hall of fame! There is hope:-)

avatar

Agreed! Joe is the WORST HOF QB ever. And, frankly, I sincerely believe Tannehill can be better than all those guys. Geeze, the lines those guys played behind are legenday. I think you make my point... Except for the wide receiver thing. Ryan is a QB that played wide receiver to help his team in college.

avatar

agn54, I said a playmaker. Not elite! There are only 3 or 4 elite guys in league. And you say I can't read....

avatar

Look guys. Ryan Tannehill is serviceable athletic playmaker who needs a clean pocket to be effective. He is not elite. He is above average, not great. Sometimes he looks really good. And, sometimes he looks pedestrian. Overall, after 17 less than average (except Pennington) starters, it's nice to know you have a QB. If we find a great QB who pushes out Tannehill, fine. But we have more pressing needs at LB, DB, TE and depth everywhere. The smart thing is to build a deep team.

avatar

I have to laugh when people talk about Tannehill as a WR receiver converted to QB.n That statement instantly tells me that you aren't very well informed. Tannehill was always a QB. He played QB in high school etc. He was recruited to college as a QB. He asked his college coach to play WR so he could get on the field because he was behind 2 other guys. So as you can see his is not a WR converted to QB. He always has been a QB who happened to spend a little time at WR. Seriously, if you guys are going to talk you could at least take the time to be informed.

avatar

@David Apollos - First, you are delusional with your conspiracy viewpoint that you start spouting in a comment on a previous article and seem to be continuing here with your mutiny talk. LOL. Second, Would you be willing to put your money where your mouth is? I'll bet you $100 that Tannehill is our QB next year unless injured. All the people on this site can verify the bet being made and that we honor the bet.

MadPhinsFan, I think you and I just have different definitions on what a playmaker is. To me a playmaker is one who does so constantly and especially when the game is on the line, not just someone who has the ability to occasionally make great plays (that could apply to just about anyone with the talent to be on an NFL roster). I also think people have different definitions of what a "game manager" means, personally I don't think that is necessarily such a bad thing or an insult as some do. I agree completely that he is a serviceable athletic qb who needs a clean pocket and he is not elite. To me that makes him an effective game manager, he's not leading a high powered offense (we average 20 points a game which ranks around 20th or something) but he's not losing games with turnovers either. I also think we need to address all of our other needs rather than a new QB as some want to do, right now, especially LB, DB, and OL depth. I don't think you and I disagree as much as it seems

avatar

BTW, here is what Omar Kelly tweeted today:
And for the record, Ryan Tannehill had about 4 AMAZING throws in that Bills game. They were overlooked because of Ajayi but he is doing well

avatar

I just call him Tanne-Hype til we get to the playoffs.

avatar

It offends me Carl.

avatar

Lets bring back Billy Turner and Dallas Thomas.how did that work against the Titans? Our starting oline isnt a brick wall.but turner and thomas are turnstiles.get a grip and know what you are talking about.

avatar

You seem like a nice guy and I always come and read your posts, but I can distinctly remember you saying many times that tannehill was terrible and needed to go. Come on man! How about some consistency? Not busting your Ba*** just stating a fact. I wish I had access to all your pots because I know I'm right about this and it would be a shame to become another "Omar"

avatar

Just win, baby. T hill or not. If this team can keep it going. Let's go, baby. Reshad Jones went down. Next man up! If landry or Ajayi go down. Next man up! In Gase we trust!
